Gravid Aedes Trap

Three words. One very clever idea. Here's what each one means — and why it matters to you.

G

Gravid

Ready to lay eggs.

A gravid female mosquito has already taken a blood meal and is now carrying a batch of eggs, actively searching for still water to lay them. This is when the GAT intercepts the mosquito before eggs are laid.

A

Aedes

Tiger & yellow fever mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are daytime biters — the species most likely to ruin a morning on your patio. They're also the primary carriers of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The GAT is specifically designed to target them.

T

Trap

Stops reproduction.

The GAT mimics a perfect breeding site — shaded, still water with just the right dark container. Gravid Aedes mosquitoes enter through the funnel and land on a sticky card. No eggs are ever laid. No next generation ever hatches.

Meet the Mosquitoes Common in DC

These are the mosquitoes you’re most likely encountering—and
what to know about how they bite, breed, and behave.

Mosquito illustration

(Aedes albopictus)

Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus)

Primary daytime biter in DC neighborhoods

  • Bites aggressively during the day, especially in shaded outdoor areas
  • Breeds in small containers (planters, gutters, standing water)
  • Stays close to where it hatches, often within the same block
  • Can transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika

This is the invasive species most responsible for nuisance biting in areas like Capitol Hill.

(Mosquito illustration)

(Culex pipiens)

Northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens)

Most active in the evening and at night

  • Bites primarily at dusk and after dark
  • Breeds in standing water such as drains, catch basins, and pooled water
  • More noticeable later in the day and overnight
  • Known to transmit West Nile virus

Aedes aegypti

Yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti)

Daytime biter with similar behavior to Aedes albopictus

  • Bites during the day and prefers feeding on humans
  • Breeds in small containers near homes
  • Lives in close proximity to people and residential areas
  • Can transmit viruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever

Stop One. Prevent Hundreds.

Aedes mosquitoes reproduce fast. Understanding the cycle explains why intercepting a gravid female is so powerful.

Why Use Gravid Aedes Trap (GAT)?

Spraying and fogging only provide short-term relief and don’t stop mosquitoes from breeding. The Gravid Aedes Trap (GAT) works differently by targeting egg-laying mosquitoes and preventing reproduction—helping reduce mosquito populations over time without chemicals or electricity.

SCIENCE-BACKED DESIGN

Developed by mosquito experts, the GAT uses proven research to attract gravid (egg-laying) mosquitoes by mimicking a natural breeding site, then traps them effectively to stop reproduction.

SAFE & ECO-FRIENDLY

A completely insecticide-free solution that safely reduces mosquito populations. It’s safe for families, pets, pollinators, and the environment while delivering reliable results.

PROVEN RESULTS

Scientifically proven to reduce mosquito populations by targeting gravid female mosquitoes and stopping reproduction at the source.

EFFORTLESS & ENERGY-FREE

No electricity, batteries, or CO₂ required. The GAT works passively, making it a cost-effective and low-maintenance solution for continuous mosquito control.

How the Gravid Aedes Trap works

No power, no chemicals, no CO₂. The Gravid Aedes Trap works entirely on behavior — exploiting exactly what a gravid mosquito is looking for.

Quick Process Guide

GAT trap diagram

This is how it works:

1

Tiger mosquitoes looking to lay eggs are attracted to the water inside the trap—especially when it contains organic matter like leaves or grass.

2

A mesh barrier prevents them from reaching the water, so they can't lay their eggs.

3

The mosquitoes then try to escape through the translucent sides of the trap.

4

As they do, they come into contact with specially designed sticky cards and become trapped.

Get The Most Out Of Your GAT

Person placing GAT trap in garden

Remove standing water regularly

Dump water from containers, plant saucers, toys, gutters, and tarps.

Use with Mosquitaire trap

Place GAT and Mosquitaire traps in shaded areas, adjusting placement as needed for best results.

Work with neighbors

More homes participating = greater mosquito reduction.

Do You Want Fewer Mosquitoes—Or Fewer Bites?

Biogents offers two complementary solutions—one reduces mosquito populations over time, the other protects you from bites right away.

Targets Egg-laying Aedes mosquitoes Host-seeking Aedes mosquitoes looking for a bloodmeal
How it works Mimics a breeding site, captures mosquitoes before they multiply Combines scent attractant + visual cues to lure and trap mosquitoes
Best for Long term control: fewer mosquitoes over time Fast-acting protection: fewer bites as mosquitoes are captured
Placement Away from direct sunlight and wind. Test a few spots. Shady, wind-protected hedges or edges of shrubs. Test a few spots.
Power needed None — fully passive Yes — low power (5W).
Time to Results Weeks to months — population declines over time Noticeable within days of setup

Questions? We Have Answers.

What does Biogents Mosquitaire do?

It targets mosquitoes that are seeking a host and want to bite you.

What is the power consumption of the the Biogents Mosquitaire?

The BG-Mosquitaire trap needs only 5 watts to run.

How do I stop live mosquitoes escaping when changing bags?

Slightly pull the intake funnel out of the trap so that the catch bag is still within the suction current of the fan. Pull the catch bag off the funnel net, and simultaneously tighten the cord of the bag so it is shut. You can find these directions in the instructions manual that is provided in the packaging.

How and when do I change the catch bags of the Biogents Mosquitaire?

We recommend changing bags regularly, at least every time you change the attractant if you use the BG-Sweetscent. A bag that is clogged with captured mosquitoes does not allow the fan to suck properly and makes the trap less effective. The steps for changing the catch bag can be found in the instructions manual that is provided in the packaging.

Do they work for camping?

Biogents mosquito traps can be installed on permanent campsites (outdoor BG-Mosquitaire and BG-GAT) and in campsite accommodation (BG-Home). It is important to choose the right position near mosquito resting areas. In order to increase your catch rate and the range of mosquito species captured, you would need to use an additional attractant with your BG-Mosquitaire, such as CO₂.

Why do I need to keep my trap continuously plugged in?

The BG-Mosquitaire should be plugged in 24/7 to keep the catch rate constant and significantly reduce the mosquito population also when you are not in the garden. Catch them before they bite you! The same applies to the BG-Home.

Can I use the Biogents Mosquitaire inside?

Theoretically you can use the BG-Mosquitaire indoors (without CO₂). But don't forget that the BG-Mosquitaire is designed for outdoor use. Mosquitoes are mostly present outdoors, and therefore we recommend catching mosquitoes outdoors before they enter the house. The BG-Home will help you to catch the few mosquitoes that enter your home.

If you don’t see a noticeable reduction in mosquito populations within 60 days of use, we’ll work with you to troubleshoot or provide a full refund.
