Types of Mosquitoes

Roughly 200 mosquito species can be found across the United States. While they may look similar, they don’t behave the same. Most species fall into three main groups, each with their own habits, biting patterns, and preferred environments. Which type is the nuisance in your space?

House Mosquitoes (Culex)

Night-time biters breeding in stagnant water near homes. Common porch pests and primary U.S. carriers of West Nile virus.

Most common

Tiger Mosquitoes (Aedes)

Daytime, aggressive biters with white stripes. Prefer small containers and human hosts. Key transmitters of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever.

Floodwater Mosquitoes

Emerge rapidly after rains or floods. Eggs hatch in large bursts, creating swarms. Strong biters that can travel long distances.

Tiger Mosquito Distribution & Product Recommendations

All Biogents traps are engineered to target aggressive, day-biting tiger mosquitoes—dominant in many U.S. regions. Adding CO₂ broadens performance to additional mosquito types. Use the map and key below to find the recommended setup for your area.

This map is based on the CDC's best estimated range of Aedes aegypti and albopictus in the contiguous US, 2017.

Why Use Mosquito Traps with CO₂

Traditional methods like sprays or fogging only push mosquitoes away for a short while and may put pets, pollinators, and the environment at risk. The Mosquitaire with Sweetscent and CO₂ takes a smarter approach by recreating the signals mosquitoes use to find people—scent, body currents, and breath. With CO₂ added, the trap attracts a much wider range of mosquito species, boosting catch rates and reducing populations more effectively over time. Insecticide-free and backed by science, it provides safe, long-lasting protection you can count on season after season.

SCIENCE-BACKED DESIGN

Patented human-scent lure, optimized airflow trap, and steady CO₂ output combine to mimic a real host—boosting attraction and capturing a wider range of mosquito species for reliable relief.

ECO-FRIENDLY & EFFECTIVE

Smart insecticide-free control that actually works! The trap is safe for your family, pets, pollinators and plants while protecting you from bites and mosquito-borne diseases.

VISIBLE RESULTS

Experience satisfying and measurable reduction in mosquito bites with consistent use. Protects your outdoor space for long-term peace of mind.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT

With just 5 watts of power consumption, the Biogents Mosquitaire offers sustained mosquito control that is cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally responsible.

Quick Start Guide

Step 1 – Step 1 – Place & Power

Put the trap in a shaded, humid spot near plants (away from patios/decks by ~15+ ft) and plug it in to run continuously.

Step 2 – Step 2 – Add Attractant

Insert the Sweetscent lure into its holder (replace about every 2 months in season).

Step 3 – Step 3 – Connect CO₂

Attach the regulator to your CO₂ tank and the tube to the trap’s CO₂ inlet; open the tank slowly and set the regulator to the recommended setting on your CO₂ kit label.

Step 4 – Step 4 – Inspect & Maintain

Press the suction funnel flap down to prevent escapes, pull the funnel out and replace with a new catch bag.

Questions? We Have Answers.

What does Biogents CO₂ do?

If you want to increase your outdoor catch rates even further or are you bothered by mosquitoes during the evenings, the best solution is provided by the BG-Mosquitaire with CO₂. Our BG-Booster allows you to add CO₂ to your BG-Mosquitaire from a CO₂ cylinder. The addition of CO₂ makes the BG-Mosquitaire even more attractive for a wide range of mosquitoes including flood water or dawn biting mosquitoes and can multiply the catch rate of tiger mosquitoes by 10.

What is the Biogents Booster CO₂ for?

The BG-Booster CO₂ combines our traps with CO₂ which attracts more mosquitoes. By releasing the optimum quantity of CO₂, you can increase catch rates. The addition of CO₂ through our BG-Booster CO₂ by connecting the trap to a CO₂ bottle (not included in the contents) makes the BG-Mosquitaire even more attractive for a wide range of mosquitoes including flood water or dawn biting mosquitoes and can multiply the catch rate of tiger mosquitoes by 10.

What is the BG-CO₂ Timer for?

The BG-CO₂ Timer helps you regulate the flow of your CO₂ cylinder. We recommend releasing 1.1 lbs. CO₂ per day (see gauge on the BG-Booster CO₂). You can program the BG-CO₂ Timer to only release CO₂ in the hours the mosquitoes are most active (features two timing windows). These are usually at sunrise and sunset. We suggest programming the timer from 06:00 to 10:00 a.m. and from 04:00 p.m. to midnight (time to be adapted for each region). But this depends on the mosquito species as well as on the local mosquito population. Especially tiger mosquitoes are also very active during the day.

Where can I find CO₂ bottles?

Note: The gas bottles are not included in the contents.
The gas bottles can be acquired or rented at drink retailers or bottle depots for a deposit. A door-to-door delivery service may also be available in some locations.

The following sites offer competitive renting prices:
Roberts Oxygen
National distributor of food grade CO₂: Air Gas
Air Gas has over 900 locations throughout the US.
Other CO₂ suppliers are mostly regional, Welding and Brewing suppliers.

Why do I have to use CO₂?

Carbon dioxide (CO₂), a key component of human breath, is the primary attractant for most blood-sucking insects, including mosquitoes. If you're mostly bothered by mosquitoes in the evening or near flood areas, they are likely house or flood mosquitoes, not tiger mosquitoes.
To increase catch rates for these species, add CO₂ to the BG-Mosquitaire trap. CO₂ works in synergy with the BG-Sweetscent to attract more mosquito species, including tiger mosquitoes. The BG-Booster CO₂ ensures optimal distribution and allows you to adjust the CO₂ release based on local mosquito activity. The CO₂ output is similar to the amount produced by a small child.

Is CO₂ dangerous for me?

CO₂ must always be handled safely, but if you only use it outside as recommended, there should be no risk at all for you or the environment. A CO₂ cylinder should always be placed vertically, ensuring that it cannot fall. Please refer to your supplier's instructions.

Is CO₂ dangerous for the environment?

The quantity of CO₂ released per day is the same as the amount a young child breathes in one day. CO₂ is colorless, tasteless, non-flammable, with a very faint sour smell. It is reclaimed from industrial production units (production of ammonia, bioethanol, etc.), so its use as a mosquito attractant does not constitute an additional contribution of harmful CO₂ to the planet, but is in fact only a delayed diffusion of recycled CO₂ (industrial waste). More information here.

How long does a CO₂ bottle last?

This depends on the size of the CO₂ bottle. We recommend releasing 1.1 lbs. per day, which means that a 22 lbs. CO₂ tank will last around 20 days. Using a BG-CO₂ Timer, you can reduce the CO₂ release to only eight hours a day (a third of the first example), then the tank will last about two months (60 days).

If you don’t see a noticeable reduction in mosquito populations within 60 days of use, we’ll work with you to troubleshoot or provide a full refund.
