Why should you use mosquito traps?

Mosquito bites are a real nuisance. They typically cause redness and itchy bumps for hours or days. But mosquitoes can also cause allergic reactions like blisters and anaphylaxis. In some regions of the world they are also a notorious spreader of various diseases and viruses including chikungunya, dengue, malaria, or Zika virus.

Regular methods of combating mosquito problems usually include fogging with insecticides, using coil repellents, or mosquito sprays. While these may be effective to some degree, the drawbacks of some of the measures, such as the release of toxic fumes and the possible generation of resistance to the insecticides might not be worth it. Additionally, insecticides can also be harmful to other insects like bees and butterflies.

Benefits of Biogents Mosquito Traps

Biogents mosquito trap systems are designed to fight Asian tiger mosquitoes and yellow fever mosquitoes which can transmit deadly diseases like chikungunya fever, dengue fever and Zika virus. With the addition of CO2, the suction traps are also very effective against other mosquito species such as flood water and house mosquitoes. We offer outdoor trap systems and an indoor mosquito trap, depending on your needs.

Our mosquito traps feature various benefits:

No spraying, no zapping:

Biogents mosquito traps and attractants are an innovative mosquito control solution without the need for traditional measures like spraying or zapping. See more information about this alternative to insecticide spraying here.

This unique trapping system was developed at the University of Regensburg in over 16 years of research. The traps have been used in over 400 research papers by scientists and other experts throughout the world.

Invented by scientists:

Researchers, local and international authorities and organizations as well as end consumers can all attest to the efficiency of Biogents mosquito traps in combination with the mosquito attractant BG-Sweetscent to reduce the mosquito population at a certain location. People around the world use these traps in various environments.

Effective and Easy to Use:

  1. Locate mosquito resting places (e.g. bushes or locations with higher humidity because of wells, drains, etc.) and put the trap there.
  2. Add CO2 with the CO2 booster and a CO2 bottle to increase the catch rate even more and widen the variety of caught mosquito species.
  3. Let it run 24/7 using minimal power consumption. The mosquitoes will be caught before they reach you.

Mosquito suction traps work either with carbon dioxide (attractive for all mosquitoes) or without carbon dioxide (attractive for Asian tiger mosquitoes, yellow fever mosquitoes, and southern house mosquitoes). All of the attractants used that enter the atmosphere from the trap are in amounts similar to those emanated from a human at rest. The continuous use of the trap can decrease the mosquito population on a long-term leading to a sustainable mosquito control.

The History of Biogents Mosquito Traps

Mosquitoes have been a nuisance to humans since forever. So, plenty of mosquito repellent and population control systems have been developed over time, from mosquito nets and repellent plants to electric bug swatters, bug zappers, repellent sprays, and insecticide spraying.

Biogents aimed to develop a local mosquito population control solution that’s efficient and sustainable. The principle of Biogents mosquito control traps is based on more than 16 years of scientific research. Designed to bait and trap mosquitoes, the traps catch the mosquitoes before they reach you and can decrease the local mosquito population in a sustainable way on a long term – assuming that the traps are well positioned.

Patented Technology

Mosquito traps by Biogents are highly efficient, because they use a patented capture method that attracts the mosquitoes by simulating a human being: through black and white contrasts (which act as visual cues) and an air plume mimicking convection currents. To the mosquitoes the trap looks just like a human being. The attracted mosquitoes are sucked into the trap, caught in a catch bag, and dehydrate.

Carbon dioxide increases the capture rate even further and is also very attractive for other mosquito species.

Now, the high capture rates of mosquito traps by Biogents make it possible to combat mosquitoes outdoors in a manner that is selective and sustainable.

If the traps are placed correctly and used continuously, a significant reduction in mosquito bites can be achieved. In addition, capturing the mosquitoes disrupts their breeding cycle: Less and less female mosquitoes supply less and less offspring which leads to a decreasing local mosquito population.

Frequently Asked Questions

What attracts mosquitoes to humans?

Mosquitoes are most attracted to the carbon dioxide humans exhale. The body heat, perspiration, and skin odor humans emit are also triggers for mosquitoes. This is why Biogents also developed an artificial human odor as an irresistible mosquito attractant called BG-Sweetscent. Using the BG-Sweetscent further increases the catch rates of your mosquito trap. When using the CO2 version of the BG-Mosquitaire trap, CO2 has to be additionally added through a gas bottle. The gas bottles are not included in the contents. These can be acquired or rented at drink retailers or bottle depots for a deposit. A door-to-door delivery service may also be possible in some locations.

What species of mosquitoes are the most dangerous?

The most dangerous mosquito species are Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex.
The Aedes species can carry the Zika virus, dengue, and chikungunya fever. The mosquito traps for sale from Biogents, the BG-Mosquitaire and the BG-GAT, specifically target Aedes mosquitoes such as the Asian tiger (Aedes albopictus) and yellow fever (Aedes aegypti) mosquitoes.
Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit Malaria and Culex mosquitoes can spread the West Nile fever. To catch Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes, the Biogents CO2 trap (BG-Mosquitaire CO2) is the best choice. Using the BG-Mosquitaire CO2 trap for the Aedes species can also even further increase their catch rates.

Is spraying effective against mosquitoes?

Insecticide spraying acts as poison for insects and is a quick way to get rid of mosquitoes around the yard but unfortunately they are only temporarily effective. Recent studies also came to the conclusion that some mosquito species develop a resistance to insecticides making them ineffective.

When are mosquitoes most active?

Mosquitoes are most active during the warmer months. Depending on the mosquito species you are bothered by, mosquitoes have different activity peaks throughout the day. Therefore, to catch them efficiently, mosquito control methods with anti-mosquito measurements should be targeted at the relevant times:
Generally you can say that house mosquitoes are mostly active from 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 11 pm. Flood water mosquitoes are mainly active from 7 am to 11 pm.
The more aggressive and day-biting tiger mosquitoes are mainly active from 7 am to 10 pm. However, these are only rough guidelines which can differ from case to case.
